The Pros of Cons

This weekend was FanimeCon... "con" being shorthand for "convention." I didn't buy a badge this time, because it's this first time I've actually lived in San Jose (where the convention was held) and I didn't know how much time I'd actually want to spend over there, since I wouldn't need to stay in the hotel with my friends. So, I just hung out with my attending friends a couple times and took a couple pictures. We went to Pizza Chicago again-- twice. Great pizza. My friends are really pros when it comes to cosplaying, or dressing up in costumes. They got really into it. They'd have totally different costumes for different days. I was just happy to be there and marvel at the creativity.

This is a friend of mine at a past con, cosplaying as this character named "Golbez."

I didn't know these guys from another past con, but you will recognize them as Mario and Luigi. They had the voices down really well, too!

This is one of my other friends from a past con. She played Snape from Harry Potter.

Ariel and Ursula from The Little Mermaid. There's a unique costume idea!

Here are some robots of some sort. Transformers, maybe. Those costumes must have been heavy!

So, that's fun. It was nice to have an extra day off work. I didn't really do anything, just relaxed and read a book and some cooking blogs. Hope everyone else had a nice holiday!

  1. Hey Jen!

WOW!!! @ the awesome customes! Great pics! Wished I could have had a slice of that delicious pizza you continue to give great reviews to, Mmm, mmm good.

Sounds like you enjoyed a relaxing holiday. Just curious, about that book you are reading, care to share it's title? Is it a goodread as they say? Better scramble out and fetch a hotdog before the darkening clouds overhead release the rain. Enjoy your day :)

    1. The book I am reading is called Silence, and it was written by Heldris of Cornwall. It's a medieval novel that I enjoyed in an English class at Cal Poly. It is about a girl who is born to a count and countess, who was raised in the medieval times as a boy so that she could thwart the king's rule of women not being able to inherit their parents' money after they are gone-- and her inner struggle of being true to her nature or conforming to her environment. It's full of adventure and romance.

    2. Sounds like a real page turner, Jen! Will keep this in mind the next time I'm in the bookstore(will make a word association with its title "Silence" with what patrons in the bookstore should be). Gathering from what you have read so far, if you were a Hollywood director, who would you cast in her role? Enjoy your day.

    3. Not sure if it's easy to find in a bookstore.. you'd probably have better luck online. I bought it at the on-campus bookstore at Cal Poly because it was required reading for the class.

That's a very interesting question. This is definitely a complex character, and the book describes her appearance very carefully. She has golden blonde hair, very fair skin, blue eyes I believe, rosy cheeks... there would need to be different actresses to play her as a child and as an adult, but perhaps Dakota Fanning as a young girl, and Nicole Kidman as a woman.

    4. Good morning, Jen!

Given your interesting response, something tells me you know something about casting the right people in a particular role (hmm, so you librarians know lots more than helping people find information from many sources). Just another hidden talent of yours emerging to the forefront is all. Appreciate the banter this week. Enjoy your day, and here's wishing you and Meesh a good weekend. Back next week to see what's next on tap here at your Epic Treats.

  2. Salutation from Ontario, Canada... what a great post Jen!

As Al commented up above, awesome costumes, sorry I have not been here sooner... but the first image was totally intriguing. Almost true within form. Now, your friend who played Snape from Harry Potter. Was that really her? I had to do a double-take, wow that was GREAT! Where you mentioned you had to purchase a badge, not sure what that meant. (sidebar I am a dumb canuck)

As for Al commenting on delicious pizza...that man is truly underfed... and going off to his hotdog vendor, yah got to love him to bits!

All the best to you Jen and Al! Enjoy your week!

    1. Yes, that is really my friend who was playing Snape. She must have spent a lot of time on her costume/hair. For conventions, you often have to purchase admission in the form of a "badge," or a card you wear around your neck on a sort of lanyard. Don't feel ignorant, I didn't know what they were either before I started going to Fanime. If you buy them in advance, it probably would have been $45-$50 for the whole weekend (Thursday through Monday), but I waited until the last minute and had not decided, so if I'd wanted to go, I would have had to pay $65 for the whole weekend (and wait in a really, really long line) or $30-$45 for one day, depending on which day, and also wait in a long line. So, I just didn't get one.. because I didn't want to potentially waste money by buying a badge for one day and then not wanting to go to the panels or being bored by them. But, yeah, no big deal. :)

    2. Hi Jen!

Thanks for the quick reply, you are awesome and reassuring me that I was not all that dense... I also check things out prior to committing myself...however of all of the costumes, they were all great FASCINATING , your friend did a character study IMHO she captured it http://tinyurl.com/6puy4yj Without discrediting others who participated, I truly enjoyed this post.

    3. I'm glad you enjoyed the post, Meesh :). Judging by your link, my friend did indeed create a fantastic likeness. I have only seen a couple of the Harry Potter movies, but Alan Rickman is one of my favorite actors. I liked him a lot in Sense and Sensibility.
