Stanford, revisited

Hey, remember when I went to Stanford last October? Well, last Friday I went back again because my penpal from Hawaii is working there this summer as a kids camp counselor. He is having tons of fun. The day I visited, the kids were getting ready to have a dance that night, and today they had a pizza party. Fun times for them.

Anyway, after my friend and I had lunch at Pizza My Heart in downtown Palo Alto, we walked around the Stanford campus a bit. We went up to the observation deck of the Hoover Tower, too, which was closed last time I visited, I think.

Hoover Tower is a 285 feet (87 m) structure on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California. The tower is part of the Hoover Institution, a research center founded by then-future U.S. president Herbert Hoover. Hoover Tower, inspired by the cathedral tower at Salamanca,[1] was finished in 1941, the year of Stanford's 50th anniversary. It was designed by architect Arthur Brown, Jr.[2]

Remember that neat sculpture I took a picture of last time? Well, there's that sculpture, from up high in the Hoover Tower. It's a lot smaller from up there.

I also took a picture of a fountain.

Here is that fountain from up close. Fountains are so nice.

Here are a bunch of the other buildings at Stanford.

My friend took a picture of me up in the tower, too. We had a tour guide take a group of us up there in a little elevator.

So, that was a fun day. It has been too hot outside to go out and do anything so I have just been working on my final papers. I should take a day off tomorrow but I am not sure what I would do. Maybe I will think of something. :)

    1. Yes, cheers to all those things indeed :)
I don't think I've ever seen a sunset at Stanford.. but that would be very lovely, I'm sure.

  2. Hey Jen!

Especially if the sunset was observed from the Fountain area--quite a scene to behold. Did you get the sense in your travels there that visitors tossed coins in that Fountain? Did you see any couples picnicing near those Evergreen trees?

What did you eventually decide to do with your day off? Scrambling out in a few to make the hotdog vendor an offer he cannot refuse. Hope your week is off to a good start. Enjoy your day :)

    1. Hi Al,
I did not see anyone toss any coins in the fountain but I would not be surprised if they did. It would be nice to picnic by those trees in the shade, the last couple times I visited Stanford I just saw people walking around or studying like at tables. I visited the campus again today and it was nice, my penpal and I hung out at the sculpture garden until he had to go to class. Hope you're having a nice week too :)

    2. Also, for my day off, I think I ended up going to the mall to look for some vacation clothes. I went to a couple malls in the last few weeks and found some sandals, a dress and a shirt. :)

  3. Hey Jen!

Sounds like funtimes on the beautifully landscaped campus of Stanford--what an architectural gem! Have you guys gone inside and/or to the very top of the Hoover Tower yet? Something tells me a breathtaking view awaits...

Cheers to you for getting some vacation shopping in before you leave. I'm in the market for some new sandals myself, but I'll pass on the dress (haha just kiddin'). Back tomorrow to wish you safe travels/happy birthday next week, because your trip may have you otherwise too busy to have access to a computer next week when I stop in.

Hope a great visit with your friend is in store. Please remember to take your camera along and snap some great pics you seem to have a knack for. Will you be posting something here about your travels when you get back? Am having a wonderful week :)

*Thanks for sharing the Salamanca link above--interesting background/history in that rich area of our world.

    1. We went just to the observation deck, which is almost at the top, that's the highest point to which the public has access. Debating whether or not I will bring any shoes with me or just my flip flops. I will probably be doing my fair share of walking but shoes would take up so much room in my bag. I will have my computer on my trip and will post about my adventures in a week or so :).

  4. Hey Jen!

Peeking in to wish you safe travels and a Happy Birthday next week. Personally, I would have opted for the shoes, but understand that flip flops demand less room and certainly are more comfortable. So, what did you decide, the shoes or your flip flops?Am looking forward to your post about your new adventures. Wishing you smooth sailing ahead, and hopefully funtimes await you in Washington, D.C. Back next week to see what's next on tap here at your Epic Treats.

    1. Thanks Al :). My friend Ashley from Maryland and her family are meeting me at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum on my birthday and then maybe we will do a little something special for my birthday like go and get cupcakes or something. Then maybe later on my Friend and I will go out to eat. There's a nice little Italian restaurant just down the road that I spotted today. I decided not to bring shoes but I am doing alright with my flip flops so far. Have a great week.

    2. Hey Jen!

Hope your birthday was a memorable occasion, many happy & healthy returns to ya :) Hope you and your Friend will get a chance to dine in that nice little Italian restaurant you spotted...sounds Mmm, mmm good.

Have a silly question for you: if you took in any more exhibits at the Smithsonian other than the Air and Space museum, Did you come across a large Blue Whale, well, actually a replica of it? One of the most awe-inspiring things I saw the last time I was there.

Have you guys been to the Library of Congress yet? Stay safe and enjoy your vacation...am looking forward to pics and a follow up post when you return. Enjoy your day.

    3. Yes, actually I did see the blue whale replica at the Natural History Museum. That's the only other museum we visited. I am planning on visiting the Library of Congress and perhaps the National Archives later on, resting today because I have done a lot of stuff so far and it tired me out haha.

    4. Good Morning, Jen :)

Sounds like you've been hopping around the nation's capital with the energy of the Energizer Bunny, covering lots of points of interests already. Are you guys spurgling on some epic treats along the way? Am glad to hear the Blue Whale exhibit is still there.

Please get some rest & relaxation in before setting out once again. Hope the weather is picture perfect there and a terrific day is in store. Was visiting the Library of Congress someday on your Bucket-List? Enjoy your day :)

    5. Yeah, we went and did a lot of stuff in the first few days I was here.. yesterday and today have been a bit more mellow. My birthday dinner was splurge-quality but actually fairly reasonably priced :). I may visit the Library of Congress and/or the National Archives sometime before I leave. Hope you're enjoying your week :)

  5. Hey Jen!

Where do you guys get all that amazing energy to take Washington by storm, especially those first few days?! Did you guys happen to catch a glimpse of the Watergate complex amid your travel route? Have you ever thought of writing for a travel-magazine, sharing the pluses and minuses of your traveling adventures? Rating the sights and sounds of your destination point(s), its restaurants, points of interests, etc? Sounds like you guys are having a terrific time--let the funtimes continue :)

Am enjoying a wonderful week. Much cooler temperatures in WNY....enjoying a sneak preview of Fall foliage along my travel route to and from the county fair in Hamburg http://www.ecfair.org/ ...back next week to see what's next on tap here at your Epic Treats. Safe travels

    1. Good question Al, it was quite a lot of ground that we covered over the first few days.. but the last few days I was there we took it easy and just went to a few more places. We did not see the Watergate complex.. but that would be great to work for a travel magazine, since I love traveling and documenting my experiences. I will see if such an opportunity comes up for me in the future.

I'm glad you're having some nice weather over there. It must be County Fair season because I enjoyed the Arlington County Fair while I was over there too. :)

    2. Welcome back, Jen! Glad you had an opportunity to enjoy some of the interesting sights and sounds at the Arlington County Fair. Did you guys have some cotton-candy? Candy-apples?
